WARREN CRISWELL: WORKS ON PAPER
 ASHERAH *

DRAWINGS FROM THE TEMPLE
(THE 553 SERIES)

553-20. Jasmine 4/2/98, pencil, white charcoal,
oil/beeswax on brown wrapping paper, 9 x 7 inches

She has been called
Inanna, Ishtar, The Whore of Babylon, Asherah, Astarte,
Isis, Aphrodite, Mary, Mother of God, Gaea, etc.,
but she is really Nature herself,
the womb and tomb of the universe.
These drawings are ritual celebrations of the power and mystery of the female form in motion,
nothing more, nothing less.

They were begun with a white charcoal pencil and/or soft graphite pencil, with the oil/wax scumbles and glazes added later, in the studio. Most of the original pencil lines are left uncorrected. All are on sheets of heavy brown wrapping paper,
each cut roughly to 7 x 9 inches.
